My Top 7 Mental Health Fix Movies/TV Shows

It's no secret, with my diagnosis I have plenty of down days for no reason. I have a list of things I do on my bad days to help cheer me up! This includes watching certain movies that I've watched a million times. There have actually been studies that show watching something you've watched before calms the brain because you know what to expect. So having an archive of movies you can pull from is a great idea.

Now, I love a wide variety of movies from musicals, to comedies, to horror. So my list is all over the place but it always means I have something to choose from. Below are my top 7, go-to movies for the days when the clouds get too heavy.

  1. Phantom of the Opera (2004 version) Yup, that's right. We will start this list off with a movie I have been obsessed with since 14-years-old and cast my number one celebrity crush, Gerard Butler. I will listen to this music just for fun, know almost every word, and enjoy it no matter what mood I'm in! I highly suggest giving it a shot if you haven't watched it yet. Though the ending isn't a happy one, the story is beautiful, and the music is out of this world.

  2. Step-Brothers This is the one I go to the most, it's hysterical! I still laugh until my stomach hurts even though I've seen it numerous times. This is a great one for lifting your spirits as it's that stupid, mindless comedy with no heavy emotion. I'm sure most have seen this but try it the next time you're having a rough day!

  3. The Greatest Showman This is truly one of my favorite movies ever! The storyline is beautiful and the music is AMAZING! This is another one of those where I listen to the music for quick pick-me-ups and have watched the movie uncountable times. The emotions are a little heavier on this one but it's a happy ending! And who doesn't love to watch Hugh Jackman & Zac Effron skip around?

  4. Family Guy Yeah, not a movie, but bingable on Hulu. I know Family Guy isn't everyone's cup of tea but it's truly one of my lifesavers. The level of stupid this show produces is always a good laugh. I've been through the series countless times and it's always good for a laugh.

  5. Dr. Pimple Popper Yes I know, it's nasty but it's one of those things that distract you enough from what's going on in life. I don't even need to explain much beyond, it's grossly fascinating and takes your mind off things.

  6. The Change-Up If you have not seen this work of art with Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, you need to!! The two have opposite lives and end up changing places thanks to a magical fountain they peed in while drunk. It's absolutely, out of this world, HYSTERICAL!

  7. Any Disney Movies Yes, break out your inner child and watch a Disney movie! One that you loved as a kid, one that will bring back some warm and fuzzy feelings and get your mind of the shit life is throwing your way.

I hope this got your brain working as to what you can add to your bad-day arsenal! What are your bad-day movies?

Best,

M
