I wanted to take a moment to highlight a product again that has been a lifesaver with Rayne.
Rayne has severe autism, she is nonverbal at this point and mentally is about 3-4 years old. While her entire family loves her pieces, we’ve had a lot of obstacles that we’ve had to overcome over the years that we weren’t prepared for. One of which was biting. Oh, how the biting became such an issue for us to figure out. She was biting her forearms to the point of leaving bruises, us when she was frustrated, and furniture in the house. The banisters and tables look like we had a chipmunk running amok!
Rayne’s biggest issue is frustration when she can’t communicate or starts to go into a meltdown. She loses control and needs to bite on something.
If you have any experience with children with autism, you’ll know that just saying “no” get you nowhere. So, we had to find a way to redirect her, but to what? Then one of her fantastic teachers brought ChuBuddys into the game and it changed our lives.
ChuBuddys are a fantastic product made of safe and durable plastic that children can chew on instead of themselves. The best part is that they have made several different products for the children’s chew level, Rayne is a big fan of their big tubes. She can clamp down with all her force when she is frustrated, and the product holds up. The integrity of these tubes are insane! She hasn’t so much as bent them, but they aren’t harsh on her teeth like our wooden furniture in the house.
This company is top notch, they’ve created several products from clip-ons, bracelets, and even hoodies with them on the strings!
I wondered what Rayne’s interest would be in the products after recently having her two front teeth pulled and ChuBuddys again saved the day! She still will chew with them on her back teeth, but we’ve caught her rubbing the tubes on her gums where her teeth used to sit.
Having something we can clean, for her to put in her mouth has been a relief. Otherwise, it’s her dirty hands or anything else in reach.
